Hook Up Apps Are Degrading
Tinder, the popular dating app, recently had a meltdown on Twitter over an article in Vanity Fair about today’s harrowing hookup culture – one that is fueled by the proliferation of online.
Mobile apps changing how students date
When UW senior Anita Ibarra first downloaded Tinder to get back into dating, she didn’t think it was for her.

“I have good and bad experiences,” Ibarra said. “It was not something I’m committed to. All you hear [is how] they are hook-up apps, but you do meet good people like one of my good friends I met on there.”
In the age of dating apps — there are more than 50 million active users on Tinder alone, according to Marie Claire — students are increasingly finding potential hook-ups, a person to chat with, or even love through a simple swipe right on their phones.
The dating pool in students’ hands
Tinder is a free, location-based dating app that condenses the process of online dating. The app links to the user’s Facebook account and allows the user to include photos and a bio for other users to scroll through, to assess potential matches.
Hook Up Apps Are Degrading People
Ibarra said that while she typically doesn’t go on Tinder dates, she did decide to meet a potential suitor after spending around two months chatting online.
She believes apps like Tinder can be a great tool to meet others who have similar interests.
“It’s weird where I met him [on Tinder] and I do not tell people where I met him,” Ibarra said. “Rather, [I say] social media. We ended up talking for quite awhile, then we would FaceTime since he lives further away.”
About one-third of the people who used online dating in 2015 had never actually gone a date with someone they met online, according to the Pew Research Center.
Scott Macklin, associate director of the Communication Leadership graduate program at the UW, said we are living in an ever evolving, fast-paced world where communication is becoming more crucial than ever.
Dating apps take an enormous dating pool and place it in peoples’ hands via their smart phones.
“Almost anything and everything can be digital,” Macklin said.
Over 40 million single individuals in the United States have tried online dating, according to the Statistic Brain Research Institute.
Tinder is not the only free, location-based dating app out there. Others range from Hinge, which matches people who share a mutual Facebook friend, to JSwipe, a Jewish dating app.
Grindr is a dating app that connects gay men. It is the largest all-male mobile social network in the world, with over 2 million daily users in 196 countries, according to the Grindr website.
“I cannot look at a guy and be like, they are gay,” said UW senior Jonathan Cruz. “I do not want to assume that unless they make it explicit, unlike on Tinder, and [on] Grindr I know they are interested in men.”
Cruz said that he believes Grindr can be great for helping gay men find one another, and has helped him when trying to date.
“I met someone on Grindr. We were chatting at first, I didn’t have any expectations at first if this was going to develop into a hook-up or a long-term relationship,” Cruz said. “I tried to date but [it] didn’t work out so [we] ended up becoming friends.”
An active user on Grindr spends about 54 minutes per day on the app, according to the Grindr fact sheet. In contrast, an active Tinder user spends 77 minutes per day on the app, according to the Huffington Post.
Cruz said that while Grindr is usually seen as a hook-up app, his recent experiences have given him hope for finding love online.
Student concerns when swiping for love
While some people may be intentionally misrepresenting themselves online to sound more appealing, UW senior Fredy Cortez believes many people are honest.
He downloaded Tinder to create new connections during a complicated time.
“I didn’t like the way it [the app] made me feel, [it] made me feel judgmental,” Cortez said. “The reason why I got a Tinder was because I wanted new friends. These people probably feel the same way as I do.”
Internet relationships form for a multitude of reasons. For example, Cortez accidentally liked a Tinder profile of a girl and ended up becoming friends with her.
“She began messaging me and made me feel bad [for] judging her,” he said, recalling his initial decision to not swipe right on her profile.
While dating apps act as a way to initially spark a conversation, Cortez said it still doesn’t compare to the old-fashioned way.
“Because we are humans, we need physical contact or in-person contact,” Cortez said. “I cannot make a connection over a text or dating app.”

Pros and cons of online hookup apps
You now have our review of some of the top dating apps. However, before you click on and start the registration process, you need to consider what the advantages and disadvantages of using online hookup apps are. Remember, people’s experiences on these apps are very different, while some were able to meet potential mates and actually settle down; others have not had very good experiences.
Pros
- Hook up apps give you wide access to potential mates by helping you to narrow down your options, and so you do not have to waste time meeting a lot of people physically. The fact that the users specify the age, sexual preferences, physical appearance etc makes it easy to eliminate anyone you’re not interested in.
- You will have a lot of basic information about the person before you get to meet them.
- If they’re honest, it’ll give you a chance to meet single people so you do not have to worry about dating a married man or woman, unless of course, that is your preference.
- The wide database allows you to sieve potential mates.
Cons

- The major disadvantage of hook-up apps is that you do not know who you’re talking to. People can give fake profiles and most of the time you really just depend on good faith.
- You will not know what someone’s true intentions are.
- Talking over the internet doesn’t allow you to develop rich relationships. This is because people will only let you know what they want you to know and you do not have the benefit of seeing their non-verbal cues that are a rich source of information
- Sometimes the reality is far from the profile picture or bio that they use on their websites.
- These apps can lead to superfluous relationships since you have such a wide pool to choose from, you can drop someone for the slightest reason.
- Due to a large number of potential mates available, the process can become overwhelming. It is very important that you are very clear about the kind of person you are hoping to meet.
What to consider before using hook-up apps.
Create a great profile.
Use real photographs of yourself and provide clear information.
Do not have too many expectations.
If you are very picky about the kind of person you want, you’ll find yourself spending so much time on the internet and end up with no one. Be open, you may actually find the person you like by not sticking rigidly to certain expectations.
Be active on the sites.
Even if you have not had any luck on the apps, continue to update your profile, continue to use the search engines, and continue to interact with other members. You may not find your perfect match, but you can build great friendships.
Minimize the number of apps you have.
Finding a potential mate online can be time-consuming because you’re spending so much time going through profiles as well as creating your own. You are therefore better off sticking to one site that responds to your needs. Stick to one or two at the most and try and utilize them as best as you can.
Final thoughts on hook-up apps
Gone are the days of sitting at home and waiting for a date or waiting to know which event is happening around your area so that you can attend. You now have the convenience right where you are and can meet thousands of people using your smart device. Choose the hook-up app you like, download it onto your phone or tablet and start the process of meeting people online. Be careful about the information you share so that you keep your privacy and avoid situations of weird people getting access to you.
